The point is the ability to run them in any order you like, as many times as fit on the interface, creating enormous versatility not seen before in a multi. Any multi can do one effect at a time. |

i've actually been interested in the M9. . . |

I guess it's possible they would drop this feature in a tiny version to lower production costs. |

Smaller, yet capable of being any of those pedals (one at a time) depending on your needs. It would also be great to have a couple on your board, if you don't have the M13 with the Send/Receive jacks. One early in your chain for dirt/octave/filters and one at the end for modulation or delays...
Price it right and it makes some sense. Price it a hundred less than the M9 and, well, not so much. $250 street would be great and would match the XX4 pedals.

They each have four presets except the DL4 which has three. They are also chock-full of old / obsolete components which cost more money as time goes by. The M5 makes a lot of sense for Line 6 since they can likely leverage the DSP and modeling technology in the newer M-series pedals. The enclosure is folded steel instead of the expensive cast aluminum of the 4 series, and the footswitch actuators + lightpipes are consistent with the current Line6 lineup. From an engineering standpoint, the more things you can make with the same parts, the greater your profits.
For players it makes sense, too. You can get the same functionality as the 4 series pedals in a smaller package, although the interface is different since you can't just stomp 1, 2, 3, 4 to get your presets. However, the inclusion of the tuner is genius. $249 and it comes with a tuner? Yes, please. Considering many of the FX that the Line 6 pedals offer can't be duplicated (sweep echo comes to mind...) in other pedals, this doesn't seem like a bad deal. If this thing does Smart Harmony and will accept an EX-1 or other expression pedal, it will sell.
What it doesn't have (guessing here...)
Looper
FX Loop
MIDI (though it may support MIDI over USB, or have USB for firmware upgrades)
Scenes (it has single-FX Presets instead.)
I would say it was a better buy compared to the 4-series FX at this point. Makes me want to sell my MM4 and buy one even though I already have an M9... |
