Hopefully I can remember all the answers you're looking for!
1.
M-Audio Uno is a good choice (I used it myself).
2. I personally used an Ernie Ball VP Jr. Volume pedal as an expression pedal. If you go this route, be sure to get the 25k ohm "active" version. The pedal itself isn't active, it's tuned for active instruments. They are built like tanks and work great.
3. If you enter the setup menu, and cycle through the screens, the firmware version should be listed in one of them
