It's a rotary knob that seems to be the input into a preamp. I'd think of this pedal just like an overdrive pedal. Anger is the input or level of overdrive and volume is the out put. It really does make a decent overdrive

This is not a clean boost. It is at least a little unsettled and goes to upset, angry, very angry, to all out rage. It would be best used for dirt color and will boost the signal a lot if you dial it up.
