It functions at 9V just fine, simply has reduced headroom. Continuing with your second question, it will break up if pushed; especially at 9V.
It's an interesting breakup for sure. Not like tube breakup or solid state, but still very musical.
This is primarily a clean preamp though. Overdrive is not what it was designed for even if it does it well.
