hi ,
i have been playing bass for around 4 months (i have played guitar for years) , i play with my thumb ... is this ok and does it effect the sound quality of the bass?

It does affect the sound, thumb is different to fingers are different to plectrum.

Thumb is fine for certain styles, laid back, no fast runs, mellow sound. A lot of bassist start playing like this then realise they need more speed, clarity, ability to dig in etc.

Fingers tend to take a bit more practice to get up to speed but worth the effort.

Plectrum is frowned upon by some, I used to, but use a plec now if I want very precise timing now my fingers are slowing.

It's your choice.

Sting is a thumb (non-slap) player
Sir Paul is a plectrum guy

They've both "did ok"

Try to learn them all if you can

You should be ok with a plec if you used one on guitar.

Fingers do take a bit of practice, and develop a few blisters on the way, when they do it is a good chance to try using more than (insert number you presently use).
