AG500 noise problem

Hey Adam i would first like to say that i think you are doing a great service for bass players by answering question on here and giving people honest answers that will really help people if they take your advice. I actually saw you play many years ago in Mobile,Alabama you were playing with a band called Beehive. You were incredible! people kept yelling out bass solo and you wouldn’t for a while then you thru out some classical crazy solo that left people speechless, it was incredible!
Okay now to my question. I bought a AG500 head last week with a DB410 cab and the thing is beyond words how awesome it sounds. However i get the worst hiss out of it when i have the gain around noon or higher. it comes thru the Di and the speakers. i’ve tried the ground lift and it does nothing. i get the hiss at home and on the one gig that i’ve used the amp so far.i’ve tried different outlets i even have it going thru a Furman that i’ve even took out of the equation to test it. I also notice that when i used the DI at home in to my little mixer that when i hit the pre eq button i don’t get anything sound out of the DI. The Post seems to work but has really bad hiss. i could be wrong on if its either pre or post that doesn’t make sound thru Di. I’ve even turned the tweeter all the down but still get hiss although not as bad, still bad. going thru the PA was pretty bad with hiss.
I have a 75 jazz with emgs that i use on big rigs all the time at festivals and never had a hiss like this even when cranked up on other amps. Do you know if this a problem with the AG500? All Aguilar stuff? Does the DB751 have a bad hiss?

I really want to keep this amp but if this is normal for the AG500 then i simply cant keep it. i hope its something that can be fixed thanks for you help. corey

I'm not Adam, but I've played through and heard AG500 (both SC and dual channel) lots of times and I've never had any problems with too much hiss. I think there's something wrong with your amp and it's probably best to contact Aguilar directly.

Thanks Chris I did some more testing today and have figured out the the DI post and Pre does work. I hooked just my head up to my mixer and could tell it works correctly. I did discover that the hiss may have more to do with neon lights and tv’s being on. At home with my tv on i get a bad hiss, as soon as i turned the tv off it mostly all went away even with the gain up well over half way. using the ground lift still has no effect on the hiss so still wonder if it is a grounding issue with the head. Even with the tv off it is pretty quiet with just a slight hiss but nothing i cant live with. im going to send Aguilar an email today. AG500 is still the best amp i’ve ever played. thanks

I have used an AG500SC for 2 years and never had what you're describing.
AG500 is a great amp. Get it fixed and enjoy!

hi corey!

man, that's awesome you were at a beehive show back in the day! that was just about the most fun i ever had playing in a band. i'm still in touch with those guys and we're actually talking about doing a reunion concert/recording. i hope it happens... fun stuff.

sorry to hear of the problems you're having with the ag500. i definitely have not had any hissing issues with mine... even with it cranked, it remains pretty darn quiet. (also since you asked, the db751 is pretty quiet, as well...) even though you were able to control some of the hiss by turning the tv off, i would still get in touch with aguilar and get their feedback on the issue just to make sure everything is operating normally. i'll share this thread with them, as well. i'm with you; that amp is totally awesome. glad you're diggin' it!

good luck,

-adam

Thanks Adam! I have a BeeHive cd that is awesome! great songs mostly funky but i also like the song New Day thats just one that popped into my head. The whole band was great i remember the guitar play was funky did all the scratch chords stuff with all the right little noodles in between. I remember you were sponsored by Trace Elliot back then at least i think thats what you said. I hope you guys play down here again the same club you guys played at "Soul Kitchen" moved to a bigger venue now but its still downtown Mobile i know you guys would have a great turn out for sure!
As far as the AG500 i did email Aguilar and i got one response so far they asked me a few questions about what was going on. I hope to hear back soon i remember he said they were really busy right now with the release of the Tone Hammer head so responses may be slow. Anyway i have a few gigs this weekend to check it out some more so hopefully i won’t have the same problem. I also ordered the DB112 for smaller gigs and i’m really excited! thanks again . corey

corey, that's good to hear! glad that you don't have a serious problem with the rig. how are you digging the db112? i love those cabinets.

just now reading your post regarding beehive and it's bringing back some fantastic memories!!! interestingly enough, the guitar player, dee rosario, is recording a solo instrumental project right now and i'm playing bass on it. really cool tunes!

Hey Adam I love the db112 its so awesome i got another one so i really have a rig for all gigs. I use ag500 with either the db112 or 2 x db112's on jazz r&b gigs with upright /electric and i use the db410 for loud rock/funk gigs. I find the db112's very portable to load in/out where the db410 would be a challenge in some places with stairs but they all sound incredible with my ag500 im so happy i got it. If i ever get a another good house gig i will get the db751 but for now its just too heavy to tot around.
That guitar player for Bee hive Dee is awesome PLEASE let me know when the cd is available so i can buy it i would love to hear what you guys are doing i know it will be awesome! I have one gear question for you, im looking to get an octave pedal but having a hard time deciding which one. Do you use an octave pedal? if so which do you recommend? thanks a lot Adam!

awesome, glad to hear you are digging the cabinets so much! i'm loving the 1x12's as well, but it's cool having the option to choose between the different configurations.

not sure when dee's album will be ready, but i'll post updates as we get closer.

right now i still use an old boss oc-2 octave pedal in my rig. i will likely replace it with an octamizer, though.
