greetings, essexbass!
great to have you here from 'across the pond!'
not a dumb question at all, btw... you will see that in that lesson i am using a series of 3 note per string patterns to play through the shapes. these are merely reference patterns that i like for students to learn in order to reinforce economy of motion, symmetric visualization of the fingerboard, and improved hand technique. as with any pattern, i never recommend that a player become solely dependent on them. i always emphasize that in a performance situation or in a situation in which you are practicing performing, you never want to be thinking about patterns, anyways... these reference shapes are great for practicing in the shed, though. ultimately, what you practice diligently will work its way into your playing on its own in the way that is most spontaneous, efficient and expressive. but you have to have the technical mastery down first in the shed if these elements are going to appear in your playing automatically on the gig.
hope that helps!!!
