Plucking hand question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, Adam. I've watched your videos, and sometimes it looks like you are floating the thumb of your plucking hand over the strings. Other times it looks like you are anchoring it very lightly on a string, but it isn't muting the strings under it. For example, if you're playing in the upper register and have you thumb resting on the d string. It looks like it might be touching the A string and muting it, but nothing more. Is that accurate, or do you try to keep the thumb in contact with as many strings as possible?

hi jason!

you are correct; i utilize a 'floating thumb' or 'thumb trailing' technique for my right hand. generally speaking, i will use the side of my thumb to maintain as much contact as possible with the strings, but just as my hand position constantly varies, so does my anchor point as it 'floats' while maintaining contact with the strings...
