I've been playing the bass for almost a year. I started out on the upright bass in January last year and I picked up the electric during the beginning of summer right as school got out (I'm in high school).
Anyways, I'm very into jazz and although my focus is mainly on acoustic because that's what I play in my school's jazz orchestra and jazz combo, I really enjoy playing my electric as well.
I was wondering who your influences were and why. I need some stuff to refer to.
Thanks! |

| | | | hi bassnoob1! welcome to the forum!
awesome that you are going to be a 'doubler'... very cool. the upright is still something i'd love to try and tackle one day. absolutely love the sound of that instrument.
my influences? well, most of them came from jazz and rock music... my first bass influence was geddy lee... at the time i started playing bass, i was in a band that did prog rock covers and such. as a result, i was really into cats like geddy, chris squire, john paul jones... then soon after, got heavy into jaco and started listening to a lot more improvisational music and jazz/fusion. i'd probably have to say my biggest influences during the time i was coming up were jaco, john patitucci, dominique di piazza, kai eckhardt, marcus miller, stanley clarke, me shell ndegeocello, baron browne, and gary willis.

| | | Cool, I listen to a lot of Jaco, a lot of my influences come from upright players, i.e. Christian McBride, Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, etc. But I stumbled across this forum a couple of days ago and I found your music. It's really hip! I plan on purchasing some of your CD's soon. Thanks for your response.
And I should add, upright bass is a whole different world, and is very challenging instrument to tackle. But it's also very rewarding. But I would definitely study with a teacher, since it's not an easy instrument to teach yourself. A lot can go wrong technique- and habit-wise, as I'm finding out.

I was actually supposed to sub for Baron Browne on a gig (his wife is a good friend of mine), but he ended up making it.
Since you're a Geddy fan, what's your favorite Rush era? I just watched the new Rush documentary, it was amazing. |

snarf, that's so cool about baron... would have been sweet to sub on that hit! maybe you'll have the chance again soon.
favorite rush era? hmmm. i'd have to say mid 70's to early 80's. my favorite albums are hemispheres, 2112, moving pictures, and permanent waves. |
