| Teaching the Two Slurred Two Separate bowing pattern IMO this is harder to teach than various forms of Dotted Rythm.
My approach is to keep the student's bow movements only as wide as the "comfort zone" around the balance point of the bow - no further out than half way and not too close to the frog at the other end. As they slur the first two notes the first is "on the string" and the second is "released" - rising through the note in the shape of the two shallow scooping motions that produce the separated notes.
As usual, speed and musical context govern length and style of notes. Any note at any speed can be played on the string if you judge the parameters of bow speed/length, weight and distance from the bridge correctly. Every other style of semi-on, semi-off and off string pattern tends to have its own speed zone. This includes mixes of slurs and separates.
In Moderato (say MM=80 -84) I feel students learn to feel and apply the "lift and scoop" fairly easily.
How do you go about teaching this?
