My question is, i have an unlined fretless with dots on the neck, and on the 12th fret, where is the E note, is it in between the dots? on the first dot, or what?

I had an unlined fretless with dots on the side of the neck and they were right on. Best thing to do is to find it out yourself by playing a harmonic note on the 12th fret and then see where you need to press down the string in relation to the dot to find the same pitch. That should clear it up for you.

Have a tuner plug it in and check.

The side dots vary with brands and models. Some put them where the fret would be, other in the middle where dots on a fretted bass would be. To play in tune you have put your finger where the fret would be, NOT inbetween. Again get a tuner (preferably one that has a chromatic mode) and finger notes and see where they are when turn says your in tune. Also using harmonic is only rough idea of where the note is. The harmonic will sound slightly above and below the point the note should be fingered.

When playing fretless try to use open strings to check your pitch. Like playing a C on the A string hit and open G-string and listen to if the 5th interval is in tune. Common intevals people check with are unisons, 4th's and 5th's.
