why can't we post when we have books coming out but we can post our bands cd's, and stuff like that heck when I read the post I got excited I have almost all of his books.
Oh well Ed good job and I will buy your new books if I need them.

It all has to do with the commercial user policy. The basic principle is that Ed can't post an ad for the books here, because that would undermine the basic concept of paying for ad space -- which TB depends on for its existence. You missed the big row about it a few months ago, but it's pretty settled now.

Hey thanks guys. As far as a forum for me here, that's a nice thought, I appreciate it even being mentioned, but at some point in the future, Bass Guitar Magazine will get their website happening (not much to look at right now...) and I'll be heavily involved with that. "Brand-wise" I need to keep that reserved for my employers. But, of course that doesn't stop me from taking part in any forum that interests me.

I'm trying to get here more often, truth be told, my default hang is usually the Pit. I also used to spend a lot of time over at Lowdownlowdown, I was the original moderator when it first started, but of course, now that I'm with "Brand X" bass magazine (and loving it), there are limits to my participation there.

So, TB is a cool place, quite a resource of info, some very smart people here (maybe...too smart....

) So, I'm going to be in and about more often.

So Ed, is BG magazine re-focusing on other types of music besides metal and hard rock now? I think it's a fine magazine, except it seems to be geared toward metalheads more than a cross-section of the bass playing community. That and I was disappointed to see them go to an all-tab format for transcriptions. I hope your influence there will cause them to rethink the all-tab policy. I know space is limited, but nothing but tab only serves to dumb down the bass-playing community.

On the other hand, I have discovered some really good metal bassists I never would have heard of otherwise, and I also learned that a Grolsch beer cap makes a nice roachclip, so it's not a total loss

Hmm, I just finally noticed that my post was snipped as spam. Sorry, don't know the policies here. Won't do it again. I don't sell them myself, but it is advertising I guess. I don't pay for advertising, my publishers do.

Then again, I don't charge for advise and lesson tips I give out at any forum I visit either. So I guess that's something I need to keep in mind as well.

Aaron, yeah I played DB, been playing for 33 years. I don't use it much lately, I've lost interest in jazz, maybe it's because I live in a small town and I've played the whole scene here, and now, I know exactly what everyone is going to play before they play it. Or maybe I'm just lazy, playing upright is a commitment, and I'm just not commited to it anymore. I'll drag it out when I HAVE to. Me? I'd rather play old country and blues, but on electric.

JimmyM - BG is diversifying it's format a bit, but they never intend to lose the heavy focus. That is the core, rockers, punkers, metalheads, they won't ever turn them away. Obviously, I'm not much of a metal head, though I've been introduced to some interesting music as a result.

We aren't attempting to become BP.2.0 (even though the three main staffers, Elton, myself and Terry Buddingh) are all former BP guys. It's a different ballgame. Check it out, or does me saying that constitute spam?

No, that's not spam, Ed. But advertising a product that you'll make money from is. It gets awkward at times, since many of our contributing members have products they sell, but the policy definitely solves more problems than it creates.

That's cool. As I said, I haven't put a lot of hours in at TB and I don't know the guidelines. Maybe I DO need to start advertising in general (paid of course). I know it's effective.

Anyway.... I'm very impressed with some of the smilies.

Fortunately, most of us know who you are and will seek out your writings that we feel appropriate for us, so not to worry. I agree with a previous poster that you ought to have a forum here. Beats having the Mike Watt forum, who, even though he's a killer bassist, hasn't made a post in close to a year.

Well, I have discussed the "Tab only" policy at BG, and the bottom line is, it's a the traditional GW approach. They tried adding notation at one point, but it takes up a lot of space. They also need room for the guitar tabs. The idea is you can learn a tune from BG and share it with your guitar player, then you can both play it.

So, that's not likely to change. While there are a handful of guys that would be happy to see the notation on the transcriptions, if we cut anything to make room, the multitudes would revolt.

Well, as of a few months ago, I'm not officially on any manufacturers "team". My new job at BG mag makes it a necessity to be unattached. I do still have 3 Carvins that I use all the time and love, a fretless 5 that is amazing, and 5 string piccolo and my 6. Those are still being played. The 4 went, and I have a nice 5 that's on consignment. They never got played, and it was time to lighten the load.

I've been playing a lot of roots/Americana—whatever the hell that is, and a lot of 4 string. Mostly my Fenders and a Lakie Scheff. So...time to "thin the herd."

Ed, it's great to have a player and teacher of your caliber here!

There's nothing wrong with having BG geared toward the "younger" metal/hardcore oriented set. That's where a lot of kids are getting their original inspiration to play. I think you will agree that tab is like a "paint by numbers" set. I think that in the long run, using only tab will ultimately hold back the overall musical growth of your core audience, and they may revolt or move on anyway. Since you are there now, maybe some columns on reading standard notation outside of the tab transcriptions will help the cause!

BTW, I think your Walking Bass series is excellent. Keep up the great work!
