3/8 Time

In a Bach for Bass book I bought, it seems that a lot of the pieces are in 3/8 timing, and I've got to the point where I'm getting the rhythms down. How exactly is 3/8 divided? I'm never sure how exactly time signatures are meant to be laid out in the bar, but as far as I can tell 3/8 is basically a faster 3/4?

Sort of.

You can count it as three beats per bar, but it's easier to count as one beat subdivided into three.
