5 to A

I was thinking to switching to a five string from a four and down-tuning the B to an A so that I have an octave skip with only one string in between, both strings of the octave open. Does that sound like a good idea? I'm thinking some light high fret work to the low rumble of the low A string.

Sounds awesome, go for it! It is basically the same idea as tuning your four-string DADG, so experiment with that tuning (if you haven't already) to get a taste for the possibilities.

Go ahead and try, but I bet you'll end up with a muddy A string and a cab that can't even reproduce the mud with any volume.

Yeah, but I'm still gonna try it and mess around with some ideas I have. I can always tune it back.

If you are concerned about mud, you could always try a slightly higher-gauge (thicker) low string... if your cab can handle low B, there's no reason it shouldn't handle low A as well, there's not that much difference in frequency.

Sounds good man, thanks. I just have to wait the two days for the shipment to go through...

C'est la vie...
