5 string right hand positions.?

Sign in to disble this ad
I read music in 4 string bass.. Got me thinking how hand position works with the B string.. I'm kinda thinking of starting the first position in 5th fret(B string).. Is that the advisable first position or should I start with E string open for first position just like playing 4 string.?

Thanks

learn to get comfortable doing it both ways.. That's the beauty of the 5 string, you have more options..also learn your scales several ways..try starting with the root on the B string and then go back and play the same scale with the root on the E string.

BOTH! Let the nut be the nut if it's more comfortable to play there and let the 5th fret be the nut when that's easier for you! The key of Eb or D has to be a pain in first position.... and are much easier to access off the B string and Eb was used allot by Hendrix, SRV, Stevie Wonder....etc. I mean I wouldn't abandon first position, I would add 5th position.
peace
