Sign in to disble this ad
Look, fellas/ ladies (i'm not endorsing the church here) i just wanted to gain further insight into these wonderful 'runs' i hear these young dudes pulling out of thin air, seemingly.

Firstly, check out this dude work out. www.gospelchops.com/jraines.wmv

Secondly, check out this generous fellow who demonstrates about 20- 30 'gospel/r&b runs' for our choosing.
http://forums.learngospelmusic.com/i...ic.83710.0html

There's a lot of theory here, so this post can stay in general instruction, for all the theorist present.

Slight correction...

The second link is accurate but it only takes you to the forum.

Once there, you click on Bass Guitars and go to page #39 (All of my Bassline Vids to date..In One place) and there they should be.

Now, it may also may be found on page 40, 41, 42 etc, as it isn't archived but floating around.

Where's the gospel? I see a video of a guy playing some cool stuff, but where's the gospel groove. You want gospel bass check out players like Al Turner or Andrew Gouche. Fred Hammond mainly sings and writes now, but in early days he played some mean gospel bass while singing.

You want to learn to play gospel bass go get some good gospel CD's and start listening. Bobby Jones has a gospel show on BET on Sunday mornings and sometimes has the band on stage.

Wassup Steveb!

Steve, in the video of the young guy at the MTD booth killing it, his 'feel' is all gospel and to my ears, his 'runs' sound like something you'd hear coming from someone that is fluent in speaking the 'gospel language'. Also, as an aside, i'm willing to be you that he was more than likely a monster gospel guy before he even got into Berklee.

Further, around 1:05 into his playing, he stops to give recognition to some guy, that i'm willing to bet is heavy weight gospel bassist in that arena of music. If you notice, he sorta concedes, almost in a way that he recognizes a heavy cat has entered the midst(maybe someone's basslines he had to labour to learn for service every sunday) and he was willing to relinquish his playing, for his mentor to resume.

Lastly, i'm not trying to learn gospel at all. Yes bro, i admire their amazing chops and endless licks. At the heart of it though it's all apart of learning the language of music. Al Turner, Andrew Gouche (another MTD endorsee) are heavy cats, as well as the many unheralded guys that grind each week, without the Namm show sponsorship and name recognition.

NAMM is not open to the public, but getting to go to NAMM is easy. My friends and I have been many times. I got badges for NAMM from my repairman, local music stores, from a pickup maker, so its not that hard to get a badge. If you have never been you should try to go, it is a lot of fun and very tiring. There is a lot to see so you'll do a lot of walking. It's a great chance to see all the boutique gear that most stores don't carry.

Being loyal to your local music store can get you the perk of borrowing a NAMM badge for a day.

Let's try this One mo gin.

I'm so thankful that the computer i'm using has dsl, otherwise, i feel that a big blessing would've been missed out by not being able to dissect these instructional clips!

I have downloaded these onto my hard drive and will copy them onto a dvdr, so that i can have something to work on.

Once you go onto the site you click on Bass Guitars. Under search, type in Uriahsmusic, where there should yield the 'bass runs' demonstrated.

Truly a blessing!

Your right Justin, stops to acknowledge Terrance Palmer, the bassist for Israel and New Breed. (http://www.myspace.com/terrancepalmer)

BTW Justin is the Terrance's Backup, for Israel.

Other Nice Clips..

You're right. I used to live in Pittsburgh. When I was there, I attended a church where he was one of four bass players that rotated. He was also a pretty sick drummer too!

Thanks Torch 7 ( i see you over at Uriahs all the time bro!) and thanks Rick 1906.

These Gospel guys seem to understand music at a very deep subconcious level, to where they just seem to be reacting when they play. No thought at all, just all 'feel'. That's where i'm striving to get at.

The Darell Freeman clip i wasn't feeling, as you can tell he was caught off guard. It seems that he has to think before he plays (like myself) it just does'nt flow outta him. Maybe soloing isn't his forte because he seemed reluctant to give it up. I wanna see some ugly faces that we as bass players make when we getting into it, i wanna hear some stupid runs, i want the whole schbang if this is something that's going to be premiered as an example.

In all respect though, Darell probably shines moreso in a group setting, i imagine.

Rick, you say you attended a church in Penn where Justin played at with three other bassist? Do you know what the other three were like?

I was there from 2000 to 2003. All of the other
bassists were older and they played bass more than Justin did from what I remember. He mostly played drums. All of them were outstanding, and they actually inspired me to learn bass. One of them was my first teacher, and one of the other guys played a Smith 6 so well that he got me hooked on Smith basses. I have owned 2 since then.

Wow, what a blessing Rick to be in the company of those monsters. I thought i read in the Brave New Bass book that Philladelphia is a bass thriving state (or something to that effect) so i suppose if you can cut it there, you can cut it anywhere.

Myself personally, watching those guys weekly would've had an opposite effect on me, as seeing all that talent would've discouraged me as to even pursuing playing the bass. Man o' man. I know those cats rocked that congregation to it's core.

That all takes time, play as much as you can, the more you play the more the music becomes a part of you. I have been playing a little over a year, and I can see that I have progressed by leaps and bounds.

What got lost in the talk is that He wasn't soloing, he was playing Jaco Pastorius' "Teen Town", If you look about the 30 second mark he is asking Jamal do you like "Jaco", and someone else is talking to Jamal at the same time.

To Get a better understanding of how Good this cat is... check out Donnie McClurkin's "Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs"

Also the second Jazz Song clip at about :58 seconds, FREE shredz for a minute or two.

True true.

I also think that trying to watch another player after viewing Justin Raines pound that MTD to dust at the Namm show is almost unfair. Justin had that thing singing.

Flat Fifth, your site is THE ABSOLUTE BEST website on the net by far for seeing the potential of what a competent bassist can achieve through hard work.

Those clips are priceless. The musicans come across as being humble.

1 request though, can you PLEASE, PlEaSE, PlEaSE, put up different bassist clips, and take the others ones down?

Thank you for the kind words and support, fountain boy. Why would I take the clips down?

I can tell you're very God fearing Flat Fifth, to take the time and post all that for free, helps an UNTOLD amount of people. I can't thank you enough. My goodness, in the day to day struggle of life, it's humbling to know that's there's people out there that would give of themselves so freely. Least to mention, the negative perception that shadows these young gospels cats, that they are arrogant and prideful because of their abilities. Conversely though, the guys presented on your site seem to take that perception and smash it in the ground. They come off playing with the fullest conviction, and at the same time they seem grounded.

All of those clips, the drum ones, the keys and the bass ones in particular, are magnificent. I've downloaded them onto my hard drive, and then have burnt them onto a dvd for my own personal viewing for instruction. Those guys humble me and motivate me, as well as demonstrate the potential that can come from the bass guitar in the hands of an accomplished player.

Flat, if you only knew the $$$ amount of monies i've spent from attending all these music schools and taking lessons, you would probably consider me a very foolish man. Then to stumble across your site, that give soo much encouragement and tips for free, wow. I could really go on here.

I only mentioned taking those clips down and putting different ones up, as i thought you might have bandwidth issuses trying to add additional bass clips to the ones already up there. I see the drummers and keys clips have us lowly bassists ones beat.

Thumbs up

Okay... Now I understand.

Within one and a half years, we have grown tremendously and we remain thankful for every bit of it. With over 70,000 hits each day, bandwidth is a concern. However, I get emails everyday from musicians who are just now finding the site. So, what may seem old to some is yet very new to others.

Sure, we could charge for access to the lessons. However, I believe that our reward will come by other means. Would it truly be ministry if we focused on $$$? I don't think so.

We are currently negotiating a major distribution deal for our record label and we have secured a manufacturing deal for our own line of percussion accessories. GOD IS GOOD!!

Please keep us in your prayers as we continue "Blessing Lives Through Gospel Music Instruction."

God Bless
