| I started on bass at 39 with no musical experience other than a life-long listening passion. It's been 5 years and it's easily among the 10 best decisions I've ever made!! My advice is 1)get a teacher for starters if you're able 2) Make yourself do at least 1 hour per day almost all days if at all humanly possible. 3) Don't get impatient, and gauge your progress from 1 6-month period to the next. ie-Don't ask yourself why you're not sounding better than last week even though you've practiced a lot-the inprovement comes in quanta. As in-****, this sounds pretty good and I never could have played it well a few months back :-)
