Question Allstar Music Lessons? Any Experience?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello Gang,

I finally finished college for the (3rd) time and I was looking for a positive way to use all my free time, and I chose to take up the electric bass. I'm not having the best of luck finding a Bass instructor here in Denver. I was taking lessons for about 3 months, but my instructor took a cruise ship gig, and left town/country... I've called several other people listing themselves as bass instructors and I've rarely gotten a return phone call from any of them...

I'm looking into DVD's from www.allstarmusiclessons.com and I was wondering what the concensus was from more seasoned veterans of the instrument, regarding the DVD's I mentioned above.

Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Ed Friedland's books and DVD's are good learning material. Some people have tried this place:
http://www.musicdojo.com/
for online lessons. The instructors are suppose to be pretty good but give 'em shout. I still think working with a teacher is better because you're getting feedback immediately so you don't develop any bad habits.

What have you done to look for a teacher? Private lessons are going to be way more effective then any video or book.

Did you check the Talk Bass "Find a bassist" classifieds?
Did you post an advertisment on Craigslist?
Have you visted local music stores to see if they knew of any private teachers?

There's bound to be a decent bass teacher in the Denver area. If you have no familiarity whatsoever with music or the bass in particular, I would recommend finding somebody locally just to offer you some inspiration and get you moving in the right direction. If you must take lessons via correspondence then you can't beat Cliff Engle.

Also, Todd Johnson has a great CD covering technique that would be good for a beginner too. He has a forum here you could check out to get info on that. Good luck to you!
