I use a 3mm pick currently - I feel it makes the best sound for me. What are some good practice techniques to shape up my alternate picking so that I am better able to handle the metal genre? Also, what is the best way to hold the pick when alternate picking? |
As no one has jumped on your post - I think it is because of your question on alternate picking.
Metal is a lot of roots and alternating picking would be an effective way of sounding that. However, I never considered using alternate picking as I'm more into chord tones and pentatonics AND
sounding the beat, i.e. individual note sounds.
Try

I don't use a pick on bass, however, on the acoustic rhythm guitar I do use a 2.5 to 3.0 mm pick. If I were to use a pick I think you are in the right range. As to holding it, that has always been up to the individual as far as I'm concerned.
Good luck.
