Alternate picking

I play metal. Or I would like to. I haven't picked up my bass in ages and since I never spent a lot of time practicing I have never really been good at it. I really want to get better, though.

I use a 3mm pick currently - I feel it makes the best sound for me. What are some good practice techniques to shape up my alternate picking so that I am better able to handle the metal genre? Also, what is the best way to hold the pick when alternate picking?

As no one has jumped on your post - I think it is because of your question on alternate picking.

Metal is a lot of roots and alternating picking would be an effective way of sounding that. However, I never considered using alternate picking as I'm more into chord tones and pentatonics AND sounding the beat, i.e. individual note sounds.

Try www.studybass.com and I ran across this yesterday, it may help. http://www.guitarnoise.com/lesson/the-box/

I don't use a pick on bass, however, on the acoustic rhythm guitar I do use a 2.5 to 3.0 mm pick. If I were to use a pick I think you are in the right range. As to holding it, that has always been up to the individual as far as I'm concerned.

Good luck.

Firstly, 3mm? It is a bit much IMO, but that is personal. You should alternate pick ALL THE TIME. It is the quickest way of learning something new. And you should pick from your wrist, it is the best way.

Alternate picking is exactly like strumming on an acoustic guitar, except it's confined to one string.
