Am I An Idiot?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I've been off bass now for 2/3 months (travelling & work commitments) and want get back into it. I decide on some of my favorite Dream Theatre songs - more so The Glass Prison... Am I an Idiot for trying to get back into my passion with something so difficult??!!

What would some recommendations be to get both hands back into the shape they once were?

Cheers.

Education is never a waste... This may sound funny, but I do lots of pushups using my fingers. This strengthens my fingers and gives them a great deal of endurance for tricky fingering and long sessions. Other than that, scale runs, permutations and the like. Good luck getting back into it.

If you could play it before you went on this break, I see no reason why you can't get back up to speed fairly quickly. 2-3 months wasn't a huge break, IMHO. You'll be fine.

That said, I agree that's a horribly difficult song. One of the most, if not THE most difficult DT song for bass.

Try playing along with your favorite radio station for a couple of hours and get that ear goin'. Play along to everything they throw at you whether it's difficult or not. That works for me when I need to get back in the groove... so to speak
