Amazing grace, bass harmonics

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all. Recently I've been trying to figure out Vic Wooten's Amazing Grace, but I can't seem to find some of the harmonics. Does he tune to something other than standard, or am I just lost in general? I watch videos of him and others playing it to see where they are 'fretting' to get the harmonics, but they don't seem to be in the same place on mine, and (I believe) the forth harmonic he plays I can't seem to find at all. Anyone have any insight on this matter?

Wooten plays that on a Tenor bass tuned A-D-G-C, so if you want to play it in standard tuning, everything will be a fourth lower.

That could present a problem to the harmonics.. Good point Whisper!

Given this knowledge, it could be possible to play it in standard tuning with false harmonics, though it may prove fairly difficult.

Why would it be a problem? If all the harmonics are a fourth lower, then they are still i tune to one another and to the strings.

Not the problem I mean. I meant its a problem as Im afraid to tune my bass to a tenor with my normal strings, it could get ugly. I guess I just said it wrong.

Ah, so just play it in a different key? Hmm, I'll have to try that...

Exactly. Here's Vic playing it in standard tuning.

I figured out what my problem was: the harmonic I was looking for was simply not in the place I expected it to be. Simple as that. Now it will just take some time to practice hitting those especially difficult ones. It doesn't help much that I have crappy strings on a crappy bass, but that just means I'll have to be extra careful. Thanks for the help everyone

I just figured it out in D, using open harmonics for everything. On a standard tuned 4-string. The E was a bit of problem (found it just past the 3rd fret on the E string). The high A was a real puzzle. I found it at the 3rd fret position marker's dot, but it's not coming out very clearly.
