Any Seattleites know well-qualified Christian bass instructors in the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett area? Recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Can't really contribute, but I'm just curious why you want your teacher to be Christian? I can understand wanting to play that kind of music, but music theory and bass technique are completely separate from any religion...

+1

i'm a christian. i have been since i was 14. (i'm 27 now) i've spent the last 5 or so years making my living playing christian music in churches and christian bands.
never have i found a scale or interval that could be considered evil.
just make sure to get a good teacher, one who you can connect with and can teach you in a way that you understand.

Unbelievable.

I suppose you wouldn't want to be paying for lessons from a grubby jew or something.

I think he just means a teacher who will teach him contemporary Christian music (and one who is familiar with that catalog). At least, I hope that's what he means... that would be awfully non-Christian of him otherwise (IMHO of course).

I apologize if I offended anyone through my posting. I was just curious to find out if there are bass instructors with experience and knowledge in worship music. Again, I apologize.

No problem. I just misunderstood you.

I play at church a lot, but when I look for bass instruction I look for bass credentials. I just misunderstood the wording of your original post.

Best of luck on your search.

Scales and modes and theory apply to ALL typs of music. Just find a good reputable instructor and use what he/she teaches you in worship

Yeah. Just tell him some specific songs you want to learn and I'm sure he'd be able to hook you up.

Dude, take a chill pill. There may be a variety of reasons he wants a Christian bass teacher. I would sure prefer one if I had the choice.

Actually if you study music theory/history you will discover that the Tritone was considered the Devil's Tone and banned by the church.

Diablo in Musica, the devil in music. Really called that because it was so hard to tune. Banned by the church anyway.

good luck on your search

EDIT: you don't need luck, you have God
DOUBLE EDIT: God Luck!

No seriously, to the op- It might behoove you find a good p&w bassist in your community (by visiting other churches, perhaps?) and ask them for some lessons. Any good teacher can teach you theory & mechanics, but if you want insight into a particular genre or style a practicing "player" will be a better resource!

If I were you, I would find the most qualified teacher to study with. Period. I've done an amount of church gigs as a paid player and, other than the lyrical content, I don't really see Christian music as being a specific genre musically-speaking. The notes look the same on the chart and the music sounds suspiciously like rock, r&b, pop, gospel, Brazilian music, etc. to my ears. If you want to be a good bass player who plays in church or anywhere, I would suggest finding a teacher who can BEST help you get your reading, theory and musicianship chops together. If faith or other non-music-related issues come up in the lesson, you're lesson time is being wasted.
