*Mods, feel free to move this if there's an actual sub-forum for this sort of thing*
Hey guys,
I've recently gotten back into playing the bass in a more serious manner and have decided that I could really use a teacher to help me progress farther in my playing. If you know anyone in the Knoxville area (hopefully near UT) who's knowledgeable in theory and funk/jazz styles of playing then please shoot me his or her contact information.
James, I would suggest visiting the East Tennessee Talkbass thread here on TB and posting a query there. Also go through some of the ETN guys' profiles, as TB profiles have a place to indicate whether someone is currently teaching.
Rusty Holloway teaches bass at UT Knoxville. He's a terrific jazz player, both upright and electric. He plays in a trio at Baker-Peters Jazz Club on Thursday nights. Look at his resume on the UTK School of Music website. He's great if he has the time to take you on as a student. I've known him for many years, and I've been taking bass lessons from him for about 6 months now.
Rusty is an awesome guy. I've played in a few bands with his son Cozmo. Rusty can be a little hard to get ahold of sometime though. You are best to talk to him in person.
Yes, you have a world -class guy right there in town. I did my undergrad degree with Rusty, he's on par with anyone out there in my opinion, electric, upright, jazz, classical, theory, whatever you want.
Highly recommended

so jmatt, Memphis and Knoxville? I lived in Memphis for a year while my wife was in pharmacy school. didn't love it.
LOL!
I'm originally from Memphis but currently go to school up in Knoxville for business (marketing and logistics). I chose to go to school in Knoxville because it was just about as far away as I could get from Memphis while still getting in-state tuition and a nice, fat scholarship
