+1 to oscar stangoro's book...but:
While Cuban music is awsome and extrordinarily valuable to know, it is neither Samaba nor world beat, as far as I know.
Samba is Brazillian, and the music of Brazil is easily as complex and varied as the music of Cuba. It is also distinctly different.
"world beat" is pretty all inclusive I would guess. I have found that , as contrabass is relatively rare in traditional world music,
the bass lines tend to be adapted from Drum rhythms and percussion parts (originally the case withe the Cuban tumbao as well)
with notable exceptions in modern African music.
The Stangoro book is excellent and you
should get it, but for a more inclusive (if less in depth) over view,
Paul Westwood's Bass Bible has an excellent section on World music , including Latin America, Many regions of Africa, and beyond.
