Hey, I've been playing bass for about a month now. I play a Fender Precision. I need some good tips. I've had plenty of music theory. Nine years of it. I play piano and bass clairnet. Tips that are useful are appreciated.

Take lessons, if you don't want to do that, get some DVD's. It's hard to teach over in a forum. Check out the General Instuction Forum.

I don't have money. I forgot to mention that it's a borrowed bass one of my friends dad had but never played. I don't have money for lessons or that sort of stuff I can play better then one guy that's been playing for a year but he's not good at music period.

Put out your music collection and just start learning the bass lines.

Just keep practicing. I'm a music guy and I'm completely self-taught as well. I won't say I'm good, but I can play. Just keep playing and keep playing, don't let a day go by without at least 30 minutes of playing. Sooner or later you'll figure out the relationships between the frets and strings and you'll be able to play along with almost anything.

Sounds like you can read. Get a method book that suits what you want to play.

I can play a couple of songs. I need to get together with a drummer friend and practice with that but I can play some. I wouldn't say it's good. I love playing so that's probably what keeps me going even through the frustrating times. I have a chord book which helps.

Don't get me wrong the people are great here and will be more than willing to help. It's just tough to do from a keyboard. I can't see your arm position, how your fingering, if your using even pressure. Slap takes a feel.
Do you know your fretboard already? Roots? 5ths?
See what I mean.
DVDs are fairly cheap, though they can't correct you when you are getting into a bad habit, they work pretty good.
Find someone with experience to jam with.

Play along with every Who album from "The Who Sings My Generation" to "Who are You". Take breaks for tokes often.

Start with "My Girl"....

Get a tab....and find the original recording!!!

Learn it as close note for note......Playalong (get into it!!!)

(more songs to follow....stay tuned)

Practice Scales, Triad and Arpeggios, if you have any piano books with scales + "embellishments", MAJOR BONUS!!!, as a pianist you can learn RH or LH parts....just apply them to the Bass

I am a firm believer that Keyboard Players, make excellent Bass Players....because they understand the Bass Clef....

Also ...apply things you know about piano left hand to the Bass fretboard, and explore rhyhymic right hand, similar to RH piano rhythms....

Trust me...if you are a good Pianist, bass will be a breeze.....all you need now is the comfort of the instrument!
