Just wondering if any of you guys were also the vocalist and lyricists of your group. I'm finding it difficult to write a song starting with the bass as for some reason vocals come easier to me when I start with guitar chords. I've been writing most of my songs starting with guitar and vocals but since my guitar playing is quite mediocre, I really want to write the songs starting with bass and vocals.

Anyone else have this problem or have any tips?
Of course I know practice makes perfect but yeah, I just hear vocal lines in my head alot better when I start with guitar :/

write your bassline around your vocals.

some do that alot.

like say you are going up in vocal pitch( aahhaAH)

then slide up the bass.

and things like that.

I write my own songs and play all of the instruments EXCEPT drums. Sometimes I write on the bass because you dont have to focus on the chords to play, just the melody and the groove. If you want to hear something I wrote with the bass, check out my soundclick page and listen to Hey Sha. That bass line was in my head, then the words just fell out. The easisest song I ever wrote...maybe 20 minutes? The bass line is kinda familiar, but the changes are a little different. I was looking for a cajun feel because a swamp-pop radio station DJ wanted to showcase some local talent. It was just My Uncle and I. It's not great, but it was great fun! Good luck my friend!

I write lyrics with a general idea of how I want the song to sound but no actual music. That's the only way I've ever been able to do it. It's nice to have some riffs and ideas to work with but structure is pretty much determined by what I have to say.
