When I was learning it, I practiced to Van Halen's "Poundcake" and Rush's "Red Sector A." Later on, Sepultura's "Arise" since the fast guitar parts are actually triplets in that tune.

Stop saying that. If he wants to do 3 fingers, let him do it. There is no disadvantage to it.

Play any bass line you would nomally play with 2 fingers. If you're going to use 3 fingers, it needs to sound just the same as if you were using 2, and it can help get you out of the habit of playing in triplets all the time with 3.

Im already out of that habit since i roll between them, not restart. So that aint a problem, just need to get speed up.

The speed will come, just work on timing and groove more. More complicated basslines might throw you off at first, too, so make sure to get those down.

One simple tip that I found helpful back in the ancient times I came from was to do your drills as you normally would but alternate between using the pointer and middle finger and the middle finger and ring. The point for this was to build finger strength in the ring finger without having to concentrate on coordinating three fingers. What I used to do is simply run the neck, four frets at a time on the fretting hand and alternating a two finger approach between three fingers. I would watch television so I wouldn't get bored as I wasn't attempting to do anything but strengthen my weak finger. I did the same routine when I was learning to incorporate my thumb into the mix and then later my pinky.

Songs are great but just like a homerun hitter swings two bats sometimes you have to just push your fingers and muscles to build strength and endurance. By forcing yourself to not use the pointer at times you are also learning to coordinate when you use the pointer. I found the hardest part was not using a finger when another would do out of habit.

Not sure this helps but it helped me so hopefully it is something you can use.

I would use the time to also work on scales. The John Myung video would be helpful because he shows some scales and also shows the 3-finger technique. Just combine the two and you're set.
If you don't want to do scales, then I think you should just start playing songs you already know while using 3-fingers.
