If you're going to use 3 fingers, it needs to sound just the same as if you were using 2, and it can help get you out of the habit of playing in triplets all the time with 3.

The point for this was to build finger strength in the ring finger without having to concentrate on coordinating three fingers. What I used to do is simply run the neck, four frets at a time on the fretting hand and alternating a two finger approach between three fingers. I would watch television so I wouldn't get bored as I wasn't attempting to do anything but strengthen my weak finger. I did the same routine when I was learning to incorporate my thumb into the mix and then later my pinky.
Songs are great but just like a homerun hitter swings two bats sometimes you have to just push your fingers and muscles to build strength and endurance. By forcing yourself to not use the pointer at times you are also learning to coordinate when you use the pointer. I found the hardest part was not using a finger when another would do out of habit.
Not sure this helps but it helped me so hopefully it is something you can use. |

If you don't want to do scales, then I think you should just start playing songs you already know while using 3-fingers.
