Applying for a music course

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys

Next week, I'm auditioning for a music course, it sort of a pre-musiccollege course, and if I'm lucky enough to get in, it will last 3 years.
Now, I'm going to play Teen Town (live version w/ some extra syncopated grooves added), and a jazz standard from the ol' realbook, so I got that down.
Now the problem is, that I yesterday discovered, that at the audition you have to play something called "by-ear-improvisig". This means, that they will play a groove or a set of chords on the piano, and they wont tell you the key nor the chords being played. I have to figure that out myself, and then improvise over theese chords.
Have you guys got any tips or tricks?
Thanks

Start practicing by turning on the radio and soloing over everything you hear. It's good eartraining too to figure tunes out on the spot.
For soloing your mainly going to try and catch key-centers. What is going to make this work is how fast you can hear a wrong note and articulate it into a right note. Remember you're never more than a half-step from the right note.

Good luck.
