Sign in to disble this ad
I have a band audition this band just told me to play 2 sets with them when they play live thursday.. they gave me songs with chord charts.. but i dont have time to prepare really..
now most of the songs are simple 1 4 5 chords some a bit harder but is there any way i can fake my way through this?
I know how to play behind the beat pretty well...IE disguising any errors i may make...
I know im a good bassist... any tips for this situation?
IM thinking of just trying my best |

Just do your best, and stay in the right key. If in doubt, play the low notes...
Good luck!

Like Nashville notation. Short form on each tune.
I've done it many times and it got me thru the different arrangements.
Good luck. |

| | | | Burn 'em all on a cd and listen to nothing else between then and now.
PS, you are being used as a free sub. |

PS, you are being used as a free sub. | What this guy said, listen to nothing but these songs every minute you can every day and they will become burned in your head and you will know them better than you think.
Put in the majority of your practice work on the hardest ones, and just do the easy ones once or twice tops. make notes and make them so you can glance at it on stage and read them, not scribble!

| | | | Band can't be too serious if they are letting someone audition during one of their gigs. |

Watch the rhythm guitar hands and change chords when he does. You'll be behind the chord change, but, that is better than missing it all together.
If you get lost - revert to the 12 bar blues progression changes - if you get really messed up - all together lost in the progression - revert to the tonic pentatonic till you can find your place. The beat is more important than the actual notes you play - keep the beat going.
Who cares if they are using you - they are using you and not someone else.
Do your best and have fun.

They will serve as leading tones telling you where to go with your lines...large drum fills usually lead to the 1....but yeah, sounds like you're being used as a sub unless the other bassist quit with no notice. Nashville number system works great in a pinch, but paging through charts on stage between songs is tacky. If they're using you on a gig before even hearing you, chances are you've already got the job unless you fall off the stage drunk and hit on the bandleader's girlfriend. Don't worry, act like you meant to play all those notes, smile, laugh and be professional. You've got this! |

| | | | well i can use charts they gave me that show chord changes with lyrics... the thing is i could listen to the songs but they do covers from bands... but their covers are "different"
im gonna just relay on my ear and look at chord charts..
Im really good at playing THROUGH mistakes..
the good news is i wont hit any "wrong" note per say ill definetly be in the same key atleast lol..
i guess when in doubt play NOTHING ! |

| | | | I've done this on many occasions
1. Know the changes if the song
2. Try to learn everything. If you cant then bring the chord changes with you
3. Improvise
4. Collect that paper. Gigs where I had to fill in like that I charged out the ass.. Supply and demand baby | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
