Has anyone read this series of books? I'd like to know more about them.

I'd be interested in finding a set somewhere to, but they seem long gone

I've never heard of this series. Bassbooks.com lists five titles in the series, all out of stock. The first three are written by Lucas Drew, the last two are by James Progris.

The publisher is listed as University of Miami Publications. A google search turned up this information about the publisher. I have no idea if they're still in business or if this information is right.

University of Miami Music Publications
Frederick Zimmermann Memorial Series for Double Bass
Lucas Drew, Professor Emeritus, General Editor
Sole Distributor- Empire Publishing Service
P.O. Box 1344, Studio City, CA 91614
Phone 818-784-8918, Fax 818-990-2477, empirepubsvc@att.net

Your best bet is probably to get the books used online. It looks like they're selling for about $25 each. I wouldn't spend that much on a 30-odd page out-of-print book that no one has ever heard of.

Vol. I on amazon - Amazon.com: Used and New: Basic Electric Bass: Volume I Standard Fingerings and Positions

Vol. III on ebay - Basic Electric Bass III Rock Patterns James Progris | eBay

Vol. V on ebay - Basic Electric Bass V Odd Meter Rock Jazz James Progris | eBay

I have them. I bought them in the 70's. There's a lot of good information in them, and a lot of stuff that is not that important. Since their original publication many very good books have been written. Ed Friedland's books are every bit as good and miles more practical.

Mr. W. You sent me a question via PM and I tried to respond, but you have that option turned off on your Talkbass account. Check to accept PM's and write to me again.
cheers!
