What are the pros that you like in the book? Any cons to note?

I've seen it on Amazon. I think Ed (Friedland) has got a similar book out at the moment too.

My question is: Does Jon Liebman show you a bunch of grooves, or is there a section in there on how you take those grooves and work them into chord progressions, different genres, etc etc?

The author is a TB member & very nice guy. I have Funk bass- also a good source of learning.

This one is on my wish list. I do wonder how comprehensive it is, beyond notated examples.

Is their information about stylistic history and background for each genere?

Does identify major influential figures in each genre and discuss their contributions?

Does it recommend any listening for each style?

Does it mention the relationship of the lines to other rhythm section instruments' parts within a style?

Just curious

OK i m going to answer the best i can....

Limited history and background on each genre.
Identifies bassists and artists to listen to for each genre.
Does not give specific recordings, albums or songs to listen for each genre.
The answer to your last question is..no.

What it does give is a lot of very well written bass lines to play and enjoy.
It also gives chordal references for each bass line.

Its just a real fun book to along too and it covers almost all the styles that are played.
It gives you a feel of how each style has a certain kind of feel which is what I really wanted.

For more detailed answers I hope someone with a lot more knowledge of bass theory and of playing who owns the book could chip in.

Your 'Grooves' book just came in the mail today and I'm looking forward to playing it tonight and tomorrow. I have your 'Blues' book and love it. The Grooves book looks to be laid out just as well with good lines and great information. And your choice to use many different and perhaps difficult key signatures is again, very well received.

No book or instructional material will give you everything you need, but Jon's books lay it out there very well, and it looks to me like this book will save me a good bit of time.
