If I wanted to study mainly bass guitar in college but still have the opportunity to play upright, where would I go?

It really varies. Some colleges will mix the program and you play both. Some colleges you play major in one or the other. A lot of schools with jazz majors are really into upright so you get more of that with bass. One private University in my state you can try out on electric bass but then you only study upright.

Where are you thinking about going.

You could do Berklee . . . there's ups and downs to that option, for sure.

Check out the musicians institute. I looked into going there for awhile before opting to go closer to home.

Like others have said-it really depends on the school. If you are doing a jazz major-be prepared to play predominantly upright bass. If you don't play DB-be prepared to learn.

When i first got to school [chicago college of performing arts]-i was much more of an electric player than an upright. Now-2 years later i feel that i can consider myself an actual doubler [play both] rather than an electric guy who happens to play upright.

School wise: Musicians Institute, Berklee, and i'm not sure where else.

I am thinking about going to Musicians Institute eventually for a diploma program that focuses on electric bass or seeing how many classes are available for a summer program.

I went to McNally Smith formerly known as Music-Tech and you have to learn both. It's up to you what you want more concentration on. Awesome bass program and has a smaller school vibe to it.
