Bass Lick of the Day

I just found out about www.playbassnow.com yesterday. I really wish I had found it sooner.

Only problem is that Marlowe is light years ahead of me in skill. I want to try and do some of these lessons though. The biggest trouble I have is seeing what he's doing with his hands, even in the slowed down takes.

Any helpful hints?

Yeah, he's pretty advanced. Way ahead of me too. I get the most use out of his clips just sounding stuff out. It's really good for that. Even if you don't get it note for note, there's still a lot of useful stuff to be gleaned.

Don't use your eyes.

Use your ears.

Forget about following his fingers, and match the sound on your bass until you sound like what he is doing. And yes, it will take a lot of trial and error, but you will learn what things sounds like, not look like and that is what you are after anyway.

start with stuff that's easier and build up to marlowe.

Using my ears instead of watching his fingers seems to be helping a lot. Thanks for all the advice guys!

might be stating ... or over-stating ... the obvious, but don't forget to read the title of the "lick" before attempting to follow along. In most cases, marlowe will identify in the title what notes he's playing, i.e. "d minor pentatonic fills ...".

despite how fast he may play during some of his clips, it helps to narrow down the number of different notes he's using. that, plus your ears, should help decipher many of his licks.

Marlowe is great. I really appreciate what he's doing, though I don't follow him closely.
