I just wanted to know what your guys best way of being able to grasp scales, modes, arpeggios(sp?) etc... back in high school I was in jazz band but they never really taught you about music theroy and all that. Now going into college, all they offer is privite lessons, (I'm hoping that will help me out a lot) but since school got out I havn't been using notes on the fretboard as much (just tabbing my favourite songs) does anyone have any advice to learning the more technical aspects of music theroy?

I don't wanna be an orchasta composer or anything, just able to improvise and whatnot

-thanks a mil

I purchased a book awhile ago that was completely devoted to scales, and went over the theory behind them. It also has an emphasis on rhythm, and to seal the package it came with a CD. Don't worry, it comes in both Musical notation and tablature. It's called Bass Guitar: Total scales techniques and applications, written by Mark John Sternal. I also heard great things about something called the Bass Grimore, or something along those lines, but I have never used or seen it.

I have the Bass Guitar: Total blah blah you mentioned. Uhhh... I didn't like it much. It just throws a bunch of information at you and says "here you go."

I had no idea where to being or where to go with that stuff. =/

tell your problem to yous personal instructor, he will help probably better than any of us can...
id also suggest enrolling in a basic music theory class in college, im sure that would help a lot too...i dont have a website myself, but im sure if you google music theory, there will be tons of sites out there dedicated to teaching basic to complex music theory.
