Bass teacher close to Toms River NJ

I'm a noobe and just moved to NJ. I have been plinking around for about a year.
I checked a couple of local stores, but the problem is I wouldn't know a good teacher if I fell over one.

What should I expect to pay as well?

Thanks

I check out some local bands and ask their bass players if they know of anyone. They can usually give you some background on the teacher.

Price varies with the area. I would be leary of guitar teachers that teach bass. Some do play both and understand the musical/feel differences, but most don't.

If you can't find a teacher find someone else learning bass. Two working on things and talking about them can get a lot done.

John K at Toms River music has been teaching forever in Ocean County. My old guitarist owned a store in Forked River in the 90s and John was the bass teacher there.

I had wanted to take some lessons from him myself back then, but he wouldn't teach me.... he refered me to his friend/teacher Dave LaRue (who was still in the area). We rehearsed at the store so he heard me play... but I sound better than I actually am, Dave would have laughed and sent me home

He teaches at both the Toms River and Manahawkin stores now.

If you are stuck, I don't give lessons but I'd be up for giving some pointers. I've been playing 26 years and I'm currently working through Scott Hubbell's and Mike Dimin's books.

Thanks James

I have heard of John, but just from the guys at Toms River Music. Like I said I would not know what good is. It would be cool if it worked out. I work at Rands Camrera on Hooper and I pass by the store during my comute.

I'll second James' thoughts about John @ TR Music, probably one of the only guys available locally. I stopped teaching well over 10 years ago, my schedule is just too messed up to try to make firm teaching dates. But as James said, if you need some guidance don't hesitate to contact me as well ...

I've been in Rands a few times... I shoot digital but the wife has a Canon EOS Rebel 2 or some such. Just a big fancy point & click. She usually does the Walmart or CVS 1hour photo deal.

FYI: I'm in Pine Lake Park... between 571, 37 & 70.

No, this is a cover band deal, the other cuts were from the fusion thing. The cover band is not at all complex, but I'm having a lot of fun with these guys. Actually, it's a decent band for a bar-type gig ...

And yeah, James and I can do some eating ...
