I'm looking for a good music theory book for a beginning bassist. Something that describes modes, scales, etc. Something that would guide a beginner to learning solid theory and technique.
Here is good overview of Music Theory, stated in simple, easy to understand terms. It may be all you ever need or it may lead you to books more suited to use in schools.

Mel Bay's Essential Music Theory for electric bass is good. It's got clear charts and diagrams and it's all related to application on the instrument itself. With that said, it doesn't offer a whole lot in the way of practical application in a live setting though. You'll need real world experience and other books for that.
Still, it would wise to consider adding it to your library.
