So, here's my situation: I really want to learn the bass, but I don't know where in this great world to start. I know there are many different types of guitar out there, and I haven't a clue on what would be a great one to start learning with.
Also, I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on one. The two jobs I work give me enough to pay the bills, feed me and my cats, and have a little extra "saving up" money at the end of the month, but not a whole lot. So I'm looking for something inexpensive as well, and work my way up from there.
Can someone give me some advice on what would be a good, relatively cheap bass that I can learn on? Is used as good as new, or should I spring for new? Thanks in advance for any tips you may have!

Find one that seems to play decently. If you know anything about guitars, you should be able to spot a worthwhile one. |

And thanks for the suggestions as well! I'm doing some research on the Squier guitar, so I have an idea on what to save up. I'mm assuming Squier Affinity P-Bass is Precision, and J-Bass is Jazz? If so, I found some decent-looking P-Bass guitars in my search for $120-150. Not bad, I must say!

They also have the Standard, Vintage Modified & Classic Vibe series. Prices go up to around $329 new for the CV models. Squier makes a decent bass these days for the $, even the Affinity.
You should be able to get a used Affinity for around $100 or so.

| | | | Another vote for the Squire Affinity's. I've got the P bass model which is about 12 years old that I bought from a friend. It's as solid as they come, no lie!
For what it's worth I tried out the Squire Vintage Modified Jazz bass last weekend and was very impressed with it. |

There's usually somebody selling the startup kit they got their teenager for Christmas that the kid only touched twice. Squier Affinities and Ibanez 100s and 200s will be all over it, usually with a practice amp tossed in.
