Beginner looking for advice...

I am buying my boyfriend a bass guitar for Christmas. He has never played a string instrument before in his life. With the help of a bass playing friend I've already picked out the guitar, amp, a book of instruction and whatnot, but now this is what I want help with. I want to put together a book of about 50 easy songs that my boyfriend can learn on. I want to use tabs. What are your recommendations? Any style of music is fine. As long as they are tabs. If there is a website with a collection I can use that would be great.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Kudos for doing so much for the guy! There's several books available with tabs, and I recommend Bass Tab White Pages, it's got 200 songs from varying styles with easy to read tabs. It's a great way to get started learning songs, although I always recommend learning to read music eventually.

Sounds like he's a real lucky guy. If you wanna go tabs, I'd also suggest buying a fairly cheap book, most likely more accurate than internet tabs.

To learn the instrument and music more in-depth, go for Ed Friedlands Bass Method books. They're cheap books that comes with play-along CD's that gives the player the opportunity to learn some theory and understand more how music works.

Resistance is not futile -- it's voltage/current.

Reading tabs is nice but like SchecterLover said he should learn to read music too. You might want to pick up a copy of "Bass Guitar for Dummies". Or there are similar books by other writers.
