This question has been asked here many a time...There are people who will say its the Melbay bass method complete edition, others will say Bass Guitar for dummies. Still more will say screw the book and get an instructor, I'd go with the later as I tend to play through books and never memorize or learn anything (cause I'm lazy), and an instructor will beat it into me if necessary.

I use Hal Leonard Complete Bass Method with all my students - I love it.

Written by Ed Friedland, another TB member and all round great guy. He really knows his stuff.

The thing I really like about the book is that it teaches things in a logical order, has good backing tracks with real instruments, and has pieces in the style of real artists but not actual real songs - so you have to read the music and not rely on your memory.
