Being the Leader?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been playing bass for about 2 1/2 years now. I've been jamming with some old jazz and blues players mostly and felt it was time to move on to play some different genres and with people more my age (I just turned 20 and have been playing with 50-70 Charlie Parker lovers) It's not so much about them being older as it is they are set to play only jazz/blues.

Well, I auditioned with a couple of rock bands and to make a long story short, I got annoyed with being told to just play the root. It got me thinking maybe I should just start my own band.
I was curious what everyone else's experience was/is as bandleader as far as songwriting, band practicing, and getting those darn lead guitarists to check their egos.

Thanks Everybody!!!

I`m currently in the same process as well acutally. I just got tired of doing the whole metal thing and wanted to get back to simple rock, with a few funk and pop numbers thrown in.

The bands I was in before the one I just got out of I acted as the band leader, and I`ll admit that it can be either really *easy* and nice, or a complete pain in your rear end. When looking for players, make sure you find musicians before you find guitarists, drummers, keys, etc... What I mean by that is find people who want to play for the band and for the music, and not just stuff that`ll make their ego stretch.

Also, look for people who want to do what you want to do. Whether it`s jamming on some covers, or going out and playing originals at gigs; make sure you`re all on the same page. As such, make sure they are as dedicated as you expect them to be and that they can find time to put into the band. Nothings worse than a guitarist who thinks he`s too good to make it to practice, and when he finally shows up to one he doesn`t even know half the songs but insists he can wing it by soloing nonstop. That`s a straight up guitard for ya.

The last thing I`ll say is to try to find players who not only meet your needs at a 'job' level, but also at a personal level. What I mean by that is that you should try and find people who you`ll get along well with and who you`d enjoy spending time with outside of rehearsal. It`ll make things a lot nicer and as such you`ll probably be more open about the music and any problems that come up.

If you find players like the ones I`m telling you to look for, it should make the process a piece of cake. Best of luck!

sounds very very familiar. although i started with one other guy, (guitar player/vocalist with zero experience)building a rock band from the ground up, gear, experience, contacts, everything. I tried to send the music in the direction i was interested in. but, being only the bass player (a beginner at that)and having some difficulty playing and singing at the same time, i was forced to stand back and watch the style of music evolve into something i wasn't even into. Can't exactly tell someone to "sing it like this, with this kind of feel, because i can't". So I eventually made a very tough decision, ( i had allot invested in this project, in allot of ways, and it was my first) and quit.
fast forward a few years, a couple different bands, and i ended up in a situation where i had a band, but nobody could sing. So, i wrote some songs and practiced until i felt comfortable, then brought them to the table. 6 months in and we have 6 original well developed, group composed songs+5 more covers, with our own feel and arrangement. Couldn't be happier with my decision to take it on and do it myself.

Being a band leader is really, really hard. I did it for years and did alright, made three albums, got to where we had all the good gigs and so on, but it's so much more than just rounding people up to make good music. It's figuring out rehearsal space and taking responsibility for choosing the material and being pretty proactive when it comes to writing music so you don't get lost in the mix of your own band like the fellow above. It's booking gigs and taking on promotion and posters and taking the heat when the club has a slow night. It's dealing with musicians that are sometimes late, or too loud, or just plain difficult, who might drink too much or show up looking like crap. You may have to fire people. That's really hard. I eventually gave it up and joined someone else's band which is a lot more successful than mine was anyway, in that we're touring nationally and whatnot. I kind of miss being the leader sometimes, and having it all be about my original music and so on, and I'll get back to that on some level, but slowly and with a better idea of how to get what I want without going through all that misery. Good luck to you either way. It takes cojones to run a band, but it can be about the only way to get the music that's in your head out into the universe.
