My instructor has me doing an exercise which I really enjoy; he said he'd heard it called the "egg" from Berklee, but didn't have any more information than that. Was wondering if anyone else had any more info on it.
Basically it's this; get a set of music to practice. In my case it's a jazz piece; F-m, Eb-m, D-m; 8 bars each. Now, using the "boxes" scale method that pacman goes over
here, pick an area of the neck to practice and find which boxes are in that area. In my case, I'll use the F 1-box, Eb 2-box, and D 3-box, since they all share the same area of the neck.
Now, play each box just up and down until the chord changes and you switch to the next box. You don't start the new box at the beginning though; you just pick up wherever in the neck you happen to be and start from there, so you have to know the boxes pretty well to be able to "see" what the next note will be and keep moving more or less seamlessly.
It's a lot like the early Fingerboard Harmony exercises, but using the whole scale and not just chord/arpeggio notes.
I can make up my own, but wondering if anyone who had more background on this exercise could offer variations, history, anything else to study, etc.
