"How To Play Bass Guitar" by Laurence Canty
I got this book along with 2 others for cmas when i first started playing. This one is bar far the best of the 3. Its pretty easy to understand, has a lot of info, and I learned a lot about music theory in general from reading it. It also has a lot of exercises and scales n stuff. I fully recommend it. It was bought for me 7 years ago and back then it was only $10.95. Good luck!

Agree with Bass Guitar for Dummies - also...if you buy the book through Amazon, you can also get the book online (so you can access it from any computer). This is great if you travel a bunch or always seem to be sitting in front of a computer.

Blues Bass by Ed Friedland. Ed did an fantastic job with this book. He also did all the blues guitar work on the CD. I've bought just about every single instructional book and this is by far the best one on the market.

I was slightly miffed to find the pdf of the book was not on the disk that came with it... ever since then, I've been searching without success for a download of the pdf... it would be so convenient to be able to quickly refer to it on my laptop or PDA without having to hunt down the dead tree copy...

Intro bass book & web site

Found this book most impressive, and continue to refer to it from time to time:

"Bass Fretboard Basics" by Musicians Institute

You can find it here: http://www.bassbooks.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=277

...which is also a great place to find bass books!

+1 on Ed Friedland's Blues Bass book

but I would suggest that if you're just starting out to get Ed Friedland's Beginner Method books (1, 2, & 3) you can get them either separate or as one book together.

Ed's bass method vol #1,2 & 3. I don't think they're the same as the blues method. I really like them. I also like his walking book. Great stuff!
