Best musical advice you ever got

What is the best musical advice that you have ever got?, and who gave it to you?

"for me it was record your practice" from a teacher.

come to think of it I don't do that as often as I should

My friend Ray is a phenomenol bassist. He told me to relax my right arm and hand. I didn't realize how tense I was. Now I play better and with more endurance. I hope more people add to this thread, I never got much instruction.

There are many. I heard a good one two nights' ago: Play each note as you would spend a dollar on each. Think it originated from BB King.

This is kind of equing advise but "Mids are your friends. Just because you play "bass" doesn't mean you have to crank the bass." Also I'm a fan of "Don't stop if you mess up." and "Less is more."

when you play bass, no matter what else you do, make sure you hit that one [downbeat]. if you don't, you'd better have a good reason. - paraphrased bootsy quote

made me appreciate the one (especially in funk), and later it also helped me realize how cool it felt to not play the one.

Play with a live drummer whenever possible.

When practicing, use a metronome.

It's not how much you play, it's what you play
