Even though learning your instrument, practicing, and growing your skills are an individual processes, playing in a band is a team sport. There is no "I" in band.

Learning is a long process, don't get wrapped up in what you did today.

"Concentrate on the perfection of each note."
this from Michael Wilcox when I asked him how to play music I didn't particularly find interesting.

1. Everyone makes mistakes- how you recover from them is what's important- Kai Ekhardt bass player mag.
2. Listen- Just about every pro i've ever met
3. Volume does not equal tone- me
4. Learn how to get a good mix with your band mates- producers and promoters
5. If you can't hear what everyone in the band is doing, you are too loud-me
6. If you just want to be heard and don't care how the rest sounds, go solo-me again

You should save that quote for a thread entitled "Worst Advice You Have Ever Received."

Easy

When I went to study music my bass teacher began by asking me a question that I still ask myself: "do you want to be a bass player or a musician?" I chose the latter and am a much better bassist because of it.

put up a wall of sound, and never let it drop.....

one of my music instructors....

---kinda translates to keep pumpin' the groove, and dont stop, for whatever reason---

do you job

one of my other bass teachers...

---this was for auditions, just go in , play and dont expect anything....even if you play your best, you might not get called....but if you played your best, and nailed the music, you "did your job"---

those two helped me alot...

The Mighty Nik Harrison once told me, and I regard it as the greatest advice I've ever gotten,

'In theory, practice and theory are the same, in practice, they never are.'

you dont have to play perfect--or be a perfect player...

but you do have to PRACTICE perfect....

a drummer told me that...

that helped me focus when I practice, instead of just "noodle noodle around"

but you do have to PRACTICE perfect....(always with a metronome of course)

a drummer told me that...to improve my timing....

that helped me focus when I practice, instead of just "noodle noodle around"

I can't believe I haven't posted this before.

When I was at school, my bass instructor picked up a drumstick and turned to show me the butt end. You know that little black dot in the middle of the butt end of a drumstick? He told me "Get in there."

Years later, I'm still working on it. But the advice has done well by me.

If you aren't making mistakes when you practice, you're not learning anything new.

What I should have posed is: "There's no 'I' in band".
