Question BIAB Packages - I need some advice please

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been looking at getting BIAB and want to get the right one. I obviously am going to use it for practice.
I've never used it before. I'm interested it Blues/Rock style type of music.
The packages range from $130 to $670

Now I'm not rolling in bough, but I rather bite the bullet for the more expensive package if it's worth it.
Are the video tutorials necessary if you haven't used the program before or can you pick up enough to get your self started?
Is there anything else I should consider? ... interfaces ect.
Is the basic $130 package enough?

Your comments would be appreciated

My opinion only, but if you want it just for practice the basic one *should* be fine. This is assuming you just want to punch in chord progressions, and you're happy enough with your computers onboard sounds and aren't trying to record albums. This describes my needs perfectly, by the way.

I've been using it since the DOS version so I can't comment on ease of use 'coz I'm so used to it, but it's pretty straight forward getting started and the more you learn the more you can make it jump through hoops.

I'm currently using the 2007 version and am quite happy with it.

plus there are two yahoo groups you can download BIAB files for many songs. You might want to check out the yahoo groups (search for Band-in-a-Box-files) to see if they have your rock/blues songs. My guess they will.

I've been using the basic version for a couple of years, and it has been more than adequate as a practice tool. It's easy enough to use. I'd start with that. You can always upgrade later if you want to, but I've never felt the need.

The basic package should get you started. It is easy to put in add-ons later, if they appeal to you.

Do check out the Yahoo BIAB groups. Sorry to tell you that the Music Business Companies that are ohhhh sooooo eager to support musicians who might want to teach others what they have learned, have forced removal of the files that would have interested you most. They cite their usual copyright & sharing issues.

The good news is, entering chord changes & setting up a backing track are fairly easy. Entering a melody line is a bit more complicated but do-able. The interface always reminds me of Windoze 3.1. Heavy on memorization & not very intuitive. Remember to save your work & good luck.
