Right at first get the fake chord sheet music on the songs you and your buddy will be using.
Let's say the chord progression will be something like this:
Quote:
G.....................................D........... ........G
Well I was drunk the day my Mom got outta prison
........C...................................G
And I went to pick her up in the rain
..........................................C
But, before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
............D..................................... .G
She got runned over by a damned old train.

All you need to do is deicide what riff you will use with this song. Lets say you will use a root - 5 through out the whole song.
So when he is playing a G chord you do a repetitive riff of a G note D note, i.e. R-5.
When he moves to another chord you change roots, i.e. when he moves to a C chord your R-5 will now be C-G. Etc. etc. etc.
Just lay down a steady beat and change riffs with the chord changes.
Find your roots on the 4th or 3rd string --- your 5th will always be up a string and over 2 frets from the root.

Find a G where is the D? Up a string and over 2 frets.
Where is the C root? Up a string from the G. Yep it works like that all over your fretboard.
That classic country verse is in the key of G. Find a G note on the 3rd string. Hint - how about the 10th fret. Your chord progression is using the G, C and D chords. Your G is on the 3rd string 10th fret. Where is your C? Where is a D? Look above and below the G. Yep again like that all over your fretboard. Where are the 5ths? Up a string and over two.......
Have fun.
