Birdland bass cover

Hey everyone

My names Chris this is my first post, but I came on to ask for some advice or any suggestions etc. Me and a mate (we both play bass) are thinking of doing a bass only cover of that awesome song Birdland by Joe Zawinul. Ryan (my friend) plays it with the school concert band and came up with the idea. We both really like it but are unsure how to go about doing this. Would it still work if we still had a drummer just to help us keep time and for one bass to play the regular bass part and the other playing melody. And we could mix it up a bit with little slap sections or something like that. I dont really know, but any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated!
