Blues Songs With Great Walking Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am looking to compile a list of Blues songs with great walking bass lines - particularly in the Jump Blues style.

This is the kind of thing I am after...

Extra Jimmies - Fabulous Thunderbirds

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPIQcFRWpNw

Can anyone recommend any other blues songs with great walking bass that I should check out?

that would be pretty much the entire Louis Jordan catalog. As in Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens, Barnyard Boogie, You're Much Too Fat, etc etc etc

+1 to Louis Jordan. Add please the James Harman Band and especially Hollywood Fats Band. Larry Taylor is your friend.

Across the Line - Robert Cray

My last band did this one, and we're adding it in my new band.

Sure. For Fats, try Okie Dokie Stomp, their version of Caledonia, Shake Your Boogie, Boogie Woogie Blues, Jumpin' with Duncan, etc. etc.

Larry Taylor also does nice work on Kim Wilson's Smokin' Joint, particularly with Ain't Gonna Do It. Actually, Larry Taylor does nice work on everything he does. My favorite player in this style of blues, by far.

James Harman: Mo' Na'kins Please, Icepick Boogie, The Falcon's Nest, etc, etc.

That whole jump/West Coast thing is a fantastic wormhole to jump down.

I should also add Stan Poplin's work on the Charles Ford Band's Gibson Creek Shuffle. Well worth the time to transcribe it.

Duke Robillard - Cookin' There's a better recording of this on his 2006 album 'Guitar Groove-a-Rama'.

These guys are a bit more old school though...

Big Joe Turner: Shake Rattle & Roll, & of course Flip, Flop & Fly
Amos Milburn: Chicken Shack Boogie
Jimmy Preston: Rock The Joint
Wynonie Harris: Lovin' Machine
ZuZu Bollin: Why Don't You Eat Where You Slept Last Night?

Mind you, if you want to have fun with a transcription, try what Willie Dixon gets up to on this. Everyone thinks they know it & that it's really simple, but...

Pete.

PS... Forgot this one: Fats Domino - Jambalaya
