Blues Transitions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

I can play many typical blues patterns, but have been finding myself stuck when it comes to creating interesting transitions between chords in a typical I, IV, V blues progression.

Too often I rely on a basic chromatic approach, either ascending or descending and frankly it's getting pretty boring.

Any suggestions on where/how to learn some more interesting ways to connect the chords in a blues progression?

Thanks!

Two things come to mind. You may already be doing this. R-b3-4-#4-5-b7 is the blues scale. Move the scale with the chord changes.

Incorporate the 7-3-6-2-5-1 trun-a-round into your trip back to the tonic I chord. Use as much as needed, i.e. 6-2-5-1 may get the job done.

This site discusses the evolution of the 12 bar blues.

You might want to use some of the chords shown in the forth and fifth stages of evolution.

You could look at it as a series ii-7, V changes....
