Book advice

Ok, here's the story: I'm a trombonist with a bass guitar. I can play trombone pretty well, I can read notes, but I can't play bass.

My girlfriend however, is a guitar player. She pretty much only plays standard accoustic and electric guitar, but she knows her way around a bass pretty well.

Now I want to remedy this. She wants to teach me, but knowing me (and her), we're going to need some form of structure, otherwise it's going to peter out pretty quickly.

So, on to the question: what would you recommend in this case? I don't need any work on reading musci, and she can help me with specific technique problems. But we need a book with a lesson plan and good exercises.

Thanks in advance!

If you've already learned another instrument & understand music then you probably have a lot of the material you need to learn the bass already.

Most of the good books deal with one specific area of playing. I have a book with Intervals, Scales & Melodic Patterns, another covering Chords, Chord Tones & Arpeggios (both out of print now) One book that's been mentioned in a few recent posts is Chord Studies For Electric Bass http://www.bassbooks.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=228 which looks pretty good.

Two subjects that may be a bit more bass exclusive are walking bass lines & riffs. There's probably a fair few books on walking (& even lessons on TB). A good book for a lot of generic riffs is the Bass Bible http://www.bassbooks.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=213&bc

In the same way you learned trombone, start with the basics & progress from there.
